August, 2006:
  • NIWeek 2006 (project inspiration, brainstorming, feasibility analysis)
  • Project proposal released to National Instruments and Drivven
  • Sponsorship discussion begins (team leader completing internship in Austin, TX)
September, 2006:
  • Transition back to academic environment, orientation (Frosh) week, classes begin
  • Building academic project support (modelling and analysis extension – real world)
  • Research internal combustion engine control and dynamics (SAE journal search, stand alone fuel management manual reading, Drivven focussed learning – module manual reading)
  • Baseline dyno test and parameter logging via diagnostic port (VAGCOM)
October, 2006:
  • Finalize sponsorship details (critical)******* internal NI push
  • Team members begin becoming familiar with LabVIEW (self training)
  • Order and install critical engine parameter monitoring guages
  • Acquire 4 copies of required software packages (including Toolkits)
  • Prototype car specific issues (immobilizer defeat, emissions, etc)
  • Finalize electronic hardware requirements (R&D manager in cRio at NI)
  • Receive hardware (end of month – three week turn around time)
  • Integrate additional sensors into power train (will not me necessary)
  • Begin acquiring base engine performance (test acquire, test track / closed course)
  • Build new wiring harness for plug and play (breakout box concept)
  • Approach department / faculty / WEEF for sponsorship
  • Midterm exams
November, 2006:
  • Build website and generate third party interest
  • Mapping factory engine characteristics (interpolation of data)
  • Prototype vehicle to be placed in storage (laboratory environment)
  • Backup / support vehicle acquisition
  • Decide upon control algorithm and begin coding
  • Begin coding software simulation
  • Plan test bench based simulation
December, 2006:
  • Finish control algorithm
  • Simulation coding
  • PDA control of additional car functions (suspension, windows etc)
  • Final exams
January, 2007:
  • Front panel building (HMI integration into dash)
  • Finalize software simulation coding
  • Integrate control into simulation
  • Run prototype on Drivven / CompactRIO controller
February, 2007:
  • Troubleshooting
  • Tuning
  • Midterm exams
March, 2007:
  • Academic report / White paper content compilation
  • Optimize performance and clean up installation
  • Upgraded forced induction system
April, 2007:
  • Final Dyno Test
  • Final Exams
